The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
